Reading the chart and the multipliers
All 18×18 combinations are shown using the Generation 9 chart. Rows are the attacking type, columns the defending type, and each cell is the multiplier from the attacker’s side. Only four values exist per type pairing — ×2 (super effective), ×1, ×0.5 (not very effective) and ×0 (no effect) — and for a dual-type defender the two multipliers are multiplied together. The real-world result is therefore ×4, ×2, ×1, ×0.5, ×0.25 or ×0.
FAQ
When does damage become ×4?
When both of the defender’s types are weak to the attacking type. An Ice move against a Dragon/Flying Pokémon is ×2 × ×2 = ×4 — twice what a normal super-effective hit does, which investment in bulk rarely survives.
Which matchups deal no damage at all?
Normal and Fighting do nothing to Ghost; Electric nothing to Ground; Poison nothing to Steel; Ground nothing to Flying; Psychic nothing to Dark; Dragon nothing to Fairy; and Ghost nothing to Normal. Immunity is a multiplier of zero, so no amount of offence gets a single point through.
Has the type chart changed between generations?
Yes. Fairy was added in Generation 6, and Steel lost its resistance to Ghost and Dark in the same generation. This chart shows the Generation 9 relationships.
What is Ghost weak to?
Ghost takes double damage from Ghost・Dark moves. It resists Poison・Bug moves (×½), and Normal・Fighting moves have no effect (×0).
What is Water weak to?
Water takes double damage from Electric・Grass moves. It resists Fire・Water・Ice・Steel moves (×½), and None moves have no effect (×0).
What is Flying weak to?
Flying takes double damage from Electric・Ice・Rock moves. It resists Grass・Fighting・Bug moves (×½), and Ground moves have no effect (×0).
What is Dragon weak to?
Dragon takes double damage from Ice・Dragon・Fairy moves. It resists Fire・Water・Electric・Grass moves (×½), and None moves have no effect (×0).
What is Steel weak to?
Steel takes double damage from Fire・Fighting・Ground moves. It resists Normal・Grass・Ice・Flying・Psychic・Bug・Rock・Dragon・Steel・Fairy moves (×½), and Poison moves have no effect (×0).
