Worked example: Salamence
The example uses the Pokémon with the highest usage in Champions Singles (September 2026) that can hatch from an Egg.
- Salamence has 40 egg cycles, so it takes (40 + 1) × 128 = 5,248 steps to hatch.
- With a Pokémon that has Flame Body or a similar ability in your party, it drops to half: 2,624 steps.
- The shiny odds with Masuda + Charm are 8/4,096 (about 1/512). To reach a 50% chance of at least one shiny you need 355 Eggs, and 1,178 Eggs for 90% (eggs = ⌈log(1 − target) ÷ log(1 − odds)⌉).
- For the 50% target, the total is 355 × 2,624 = 931,520 steps.
Egg step tiers
Splitting all 1,025 National Pokédex species by egg steps gives 11 tiers. “Halved” is the step count with a Flame Body (or similar) Pokémon in your party.

Step counts follow Scarlet & Violet (one cycle = 128 steps). Species are counted by Pokédex number; alternate forms share their base Pokémon’s step count and are not counted separately. Examples are hatchable Pokémon in Pokédex order (for tiers with none, Pokémon from the Undiscovered group).
Egg steps and hunt length
Egg steps come from each Pokémon’s egg-cycle count. In Scarlet & Violet one cycle is 128 steps, so the figure is (cycles + 1) × 128. Carrying a Pokémon with Flame Body or a similar ability halves it. For shiny hunting, the tool also multiplies the eggs you need by the step count to give a total.

FAQ
What determines how many steps an egg takes?
By the species’ fixed egg-cycle count. In Generation 9 a cycle is 128 steps, so a 20-cycle Pokémon needs about (20+1) × 128 = 2,688 steps.
Can I make eggs hatch faster?
Keep a Pokémon with Flame Body, Steam Engine or Magma Armor in your party to halve the steps required. Stacking more than one does not help further.
How many eggs do I need to hatch for a shiny?
With the Masuda method (1/683), about 473 eggs for a 50% chance and 1,571 for 90%. Combining it with the Shiny Charm (1/512) brings 50% down to 355 eggs. Pick a target rate on this page to also get the total step count.
